Spark Plugs

Your vehicle's engine needs to burn a mixture of fuel and air to produce power. Its spark plugs are responsible for igniting said mix. They work as part of a process called spark ignition.

The process starts when the ignition switch triggers, the result of turning your key in the lock cylinder; several ignition parts then activate -- among them, your car battery, plus a starter motor, a starter solenoid, and an ignition coil. Together, they generate electricity, and the plugs' leads capture it. Combustion then occurs, and the engine's pistons pump, its crankshaft turns, the alternator starts running, and many other parts and systems get moving.

Unfortunately, though, spark plugs don't last indefinitely. When they start to go bad or fail outright, however, there are symptoms you can look for. Some of the most obvious include corrosion, widened leads, worsening conductivity, and plug wear and breakage. Some of the less obvious signs, though, are hard starts, reduced gas mileage, a misfiring engine, idling roughly, and problems accelerating.

You should change them, on the one hand, when you see the aforementioned signs. You also need to do it if you do an engine inspection, and the results call for it. Otherwise, replace them before they exceed the mileage limits suggested in your owner's manual.
