Oil Filters

Your vehicle's motor oil lubricates engine parts. It builds up contaminants as it does. Plus, it's got a few byproducts left over from its production process. Your vehicle's oil filter captures both (a lot like air filters do for heaters and air conditioning systems and fuel filters do for the lines and tanks in fuel systems). In doing so, it helps protect and prolong the lives of the oil pump and its bearings.

Oil filters are made up of three parts, essentially: housings, filter media, and gaskets. The oil filter housing, you can often find next to the engine cover in the engine bay; it holds the filter medium and attaches it to the engine. The oil filter gasket creates a seal that helps both close the filter off from the outside and prevent oil leaks.

You can usually access your oil filter from under your engine compartment (after removing an undertray, if your model has one). You may also be able to get to it from above the bay. For the final word on this, check your owner's manual.

Oil filters don't exactly last forever, though. Yours will need replacing every 3,000 miles or every 3 months -- namely, during every oil change or every other one, according to many maintenance schedules. Otherwise, take care of it either when use and age wear out the filter medium or it gets clogged. Be sure to replace the housing gaskets, however, when they get brittle and start to crack, preferably even before that, as they can leak oil. The warning signs, in such a case, will be subpar engine performance, a loss of oil pressure, and an engine oil warning light on the dashboard.

Before changing the filter, though, be sure you know what thread and gasket sizes you need. This info, you should be able to find in your owner's manual. If you install one that's the wrong size, it can cause an oil leak, just like a bad housing gasket can. Worse yet, it can cause serious and expensive engine damage, should the filter fall off the oil pump.
