When it comes to upgrading a vehicle, floor mats are one of the better choices you can make among interior accessories. Whether you know them as cargo accessories like floor liners, or simply as car mats, what they do -- safeguard both floor plastics and their upholstery (floor carpets) -- may seem apparent. There's a little more to them, though.

For example, most are made of either absorbent fabric or repellent rubber or vinyl. Carpet floor mats are ideal for normal, everyday use, while rubberized or vinyl floor mats are "all-weather," useful in many different climates. Also, their styles and colors can vary widely, from fade-, stain-, and slip-resistance to caps, high treads, raised or beveled edges, or spikes to simplify cleaning. They can even have clips, retainers, or nibs to help them grip floors better.

No floor mat is permanent, though. You'll have to replace them all when they start tearing, sliding around, and crumpling up. Tears let crud accumulate under them, and it can only build up over time, leading almost invariably to floor damage. If your driver's side mat slips and bunches up, though, it can lodge under your brake pedal or throttle. That can put you in serious danger during a drive.
