Brake Pads

The brake calipers in your disc brake system have textured surfaces on top of them. They're your brake pads. Put simply, they're buffers between the calipers and the brake rotors, and they generate friction when they all rub together. This resistance slows and stops your vehicle's wheels and tires.

There are four types of brake pads, generally: organic, ceramic, metallic/semi-metallic, and carbon fiber. Organic is designed for everyday driving. It's because the pads are dependable, comparatively easy on rotors, and relatively reasonably priced. Plus, they don't create much dust.

Ceramic, on the other hand, is ideal for weather of all kinds. It's because they're more durable, plus, their dust doesn't stick to wheels as much. They're quieter than other kinds as well.

Metallic/semi-metallic, though, is a bigger step up. These not only feel firmer overall than other pad types. They also work better at higher heat, not to mention they up to brake fade.

Carbon fiber, however, is the ultimate choice. These pads deliver the best stopping power you can get. That owes to a combination of high strength and extreme temperature resistance.

Unfortunately, no brake pads are permanent, exactly. You'll have to replace them, depending on how and where you drive, about every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Luckily, when they start to go bad, there are signs to tell you.

For instance, you may notice that slowing down and stopping is starting to take longer. Warning lights on the dash may accompany that, along with visible rotor warp and pad wear or damage. You may also hear your brakes whining or grinding and feel them vibrating.
