Air Filters

Your vehicle has two air filters. One is for the engine. The other is for the cabin. Their job is to capture airborne contaminants. The engine air filter catches dirt, sand, and road debris before they can enter the air intake and the rest of the motor. The cabin air filter traps mold spores, pollen, insects, and more before they can get into the heating and air conditioning systems.

Air filters can be made of almost anything. Their media will almost always be either foam, cotton, metal, or synthetic paper, though. It'll either be flat, circular, or cylinder-shaped, too, and usually pleated for catching infiltrates better. Some are even designed permanent, meaning washable and reusable.

Unfortunately, an air filter can still go bad. Luckily, when one does, there are signs to tell you, the most obvious are clogs, obstructed airflow, and medium wear or damage.

Less obvious symptoms, however, range from a Check Engine light on the dashboard and worsening gas mileage to engine power loss and misfires, unusual motor noises, and black exhaust smoke. You may also notice your vehicle having trouble accelerating, whistling or other abnormal sounds in-cabin, plus a dirty or stale smell.

See any of these, and you should run an inspection and change whichever filters the results call for. Otherwise, replace them once annually, every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and no more than every 30,000 miles.
